After weeks of tension, plots and backstabbing, The Celebrity Traitors concludes with a thrilling finale
Spoiler alert - This article reveals details from The Celebrity Traitors conclusion
Over the course of the show, viewers witnessed eliminations, double-crosses, intense glares, and an unforgettable incident that pierced the overwhelming suspense.
However on the final evening, the ultimate victor of the inaugural Celebrity Traitors emerged triumphant.
From 19 contestants, only five remained: Deceivers and loyal players competing for the prize.
Soon, the competition tightened to just three: the remaining contestants.
Ultimately, comedian Alan Carr was crowned the winner, in a surprising result that broke the internet and made him tearful.
"This has been destroying me, I'm so sorry," he declared, revealing to the other players that he was actually one of the deceivers. "I feel terrible about this."
"You did brilliantly," they consoled him. "It's all right."
Social media quickly erupted with the news. "Most awful traitor ever being the most effective player," commented a viewer.
"It couldn't have been a better conclusion," wrote a different person, while a third described it as "the TV moment of the year."
His chosen charity, a cancer charity, gets to keep the entire winnings, with the final pot reaching ÂŁ87,500.
The comedian's evolution from giggle liability to cold-hearted killer was among the most memorable aspects of the season.
But his win still left the nation surprised, as noted by industry observers.
"The idea of Alan, among everyone, pulling off a masterclass in deceit felt about as likely as him maintaining composure through one of his own punchlines."
On subsequent discussions, the other contestants summed up why no one had ever really suspected him.
"Alan could have appeared to the morning meal in traitor attire and I wouldn't have believed he was deceiving us. His humor distracted me," a player said.
"The majority didn't target him because how does one vote for someone who is so charming?" asked another celebrity.
The winner stated he had "absolutely loved" his time on the show.
"I'd like to participate once more... I doubt it would work a second time!"
The final installment was lengthened to over an hour on television. It had an unusual opening than typical episodes, as all the celebs were aware who would appear at the morning gathering.
Viewers heard particularly inspiring, and very un-Traitors-esque soundtrack, as we recapped some moments from every remaining player's time in the castle.
As ever, Alan Carr gave us unforgettable quotes.
"Let's face it, I started this game a bit of an anxious mess. I've betrayed some really good friends under the bus, I've murdered national treasures openly. Apparently I'm a better liar and traitor than I thought."
At the same time, a different player noted that reaching the conclusion was "significantly more pressure than playing for a national team", while someone else said he was "totally surprised" to have made it so far.
In the beginning of the finale, various contestants appeared to be making a bid to become the fashion standout of the castle, taking over from an earlier departed fashionable contestant.
Carr emerged at breakfast resembling a vintage television personality in patterned burgundy attire, before changing into an embellished light-colored outfit.
But he was outstyled by another contestant's burgundy formal wear. What a look.
Following this was the competition, with the final players getting on board a train named - of course - The Traitors Express.
The challenge saw them ripping up portraits of eliminated players. Spare a thought for a player who managed to get hit on the head THREE times by the cover of a heavy wooden box.
Before long, the moment arrived for the roundtable.
The deceivers did a pinky promise in advance, pledging to stick together. "We've progressed significantly, I won't betray him," stated one, while their partner just giggled.
And one did stick to his promise. Yet, managing to stay unnoticed for most of the game, the other still received the majority elimination votes.
The remaining traitor looked like he was in significant distress to be the final deceiver remaining. "Now I'm on my own, I'm frightened," he said. "I'm unpredictable, without direction."
Social media and viewers were similarly upset.
"I hoped against that player to be banished. A truly loveable traitor," said an observer.
"Your legacy will remain in Traitors history," posted another user.
But there was little opportunity to focus on this departure. Before long, they were at the final stage - this being the moment everyone anticipated.
The last players stood over the ceremonial fire. And the alliance broke down, just when it mattered the most, in an absolutely shocking development.
A player was painfully banished - after a shock vote from their ally, who betrayed them.
"This pains me to be betrayed last minute in that manner," said the eliminated player. Later, it was revealed that when they message, the betrayed player calls their former ally as a traitor.
Finally, just three players remained in the game: the last participants.
One player, appearing quite pleased, voted to end the competition. So did a different player, and it all came down to the third, who made the identical choice - which meant that the traitor emerged victorious.
According to commentators, the moment where the other players comforted the champion was "beautiful TV". "I predict it could be in the running for memorable moment at next year's awards," they commented.
Fortunately, the winner quickly regained composure from his emotional outburst, and could finally appreciate his victory.
"What a rollercoaster. I was awful at lying, I had no poker face and here I am the champion," the winner said.
He also made light of the memorable elimination - his close ally in an early episode - by reaching over the host in the final scene and touching her cheek.
"There's something on your face," he said, with his characteristic laugh.
The last few weeks of celebrity gossiping, scheming and the occasional unexpected moments may seem like one big crazy jumbled dream. But it really did occur. And we will miss it.
