Antony Price, Famed for Designing for Bowie and Duran Duran, Has Died Aged 80.
Antony Price, the visionary UK-based designer responsible for some of the most iconic looks favored by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has sadly died aged 80.
Price was best known for his architectural shapes and performative fashion, such as the light-hued ensembles that became famous from the pop-rock group Duran Duran's seminal music video for "their hit Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance on social media."
This news arrives just weeks after he presented his latest collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Artist Lily Allen showcased a dress evoking the notorious black velvet "revenge dress" once worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.
A Pioneering Career
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price headed for London at the start of the 1960s to attend the renowned Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he began designing clothing for men at Stirling Copper and was responsible for the form-fitting, button-fly pants that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger famously wore during the band's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show was launched by outfits on model Jerry Hall, who later wore the bridal gown Price created for her for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.
Partnerships with Stars
A frequent collaborator of David Bowie, Price designed the iconic jacket the artist wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to merge menswear and womenswear along with his masterful technique in designing sculptural silhouettes made him a "genuine original," as stated by the British Fashion Council.
During the nineties, he started creating outfits for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, such as a number of outfits for her American tour following her marriage.
After a career spanning more than five decades, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London recently in collaboration with the design house 16Arlington.
