At least 64 Dead in Rio de Janeiro's Biggest Law Enforcement Operation on Organized Crime

A minimum of 64 individuals lost their lives in a security raid targeting the organized crime group in Rio de Janeiro's north zone - the biggest and most lethal operation in the Brazilian state's records.

Four law enforcement personnel were included in the fatalities during the police action in the AlemĂŁo and Penha districts, state officials stated. Over 80 individuals were taken into custody.

Violent conflicts broke out when about 2,500 police forces initiated the operation on Tuesday early hours. The Red Command responded with armed resistance, setting fire to barriers and launching explosives via unmanned aircraft, police representatives said.

The International human rights organization said it was "appalled" by the security action, urging "prompt and effective investigations".

Raid Aftermath

The informal settlements near Rio's airport is regarded as the main base of a major illegal networks.

State officials confirmed at least 50 of the fatalities were "classified by law enforcement as potential lawbreakers".

Many residents were wounded, including civilians caught in the crossfire.

Community Response

Community members have likened the hillside area - housing around 300,000 residents - to a "combat area" since the operation began.

Roads remain closed across the area.

Organized Crime Spread

The criminal network have been expanding their control throughout the region, growing illegal substance trade paths and control of the hillside favelas.

Local law enforcement reported in excess of 200kg (441lb) of illegal substances were confiscated in the raid, together with multiple guns.

Raid Preparation

The combined action by different law enforcement agencies comes after a year-long investigation.

Dozens of the suspects are thought to be members of a faction from the Brazilian state who are presently concealed in Rio de Janeiro.
