A substantial Pacific bluefin tuna caused a stir at the Toyosu fish market this Monday, securing a record-breaking bid of 510.3 million yen ($3.2 million; ÂŁ2.4m) during the venue's first auction of the new year.

The successful bid for the 243-kilogram fish came from the company of a nationwide sushi restaurant group, which manages locations throughout Japan and internationally.

"An inaugural tuna signals a prosperous start," commented the entrepreneur, a regular bidder at the yearly January sale.

Known as the King of Tuna, this businessman is renowned for making substantial bids for premium bluefin tuna at these auspicious January auctions.

Auction Shock and Historic Precedent

Following the auction, the winner admitted to the press that he was "taken aback at the winning bid," noting, "I believed we would be able to acquire it a little cheaper, but the price skyrocketed in no time."

This most recent purchase tops his own historic purchases:

  • He paid 56.5 million yen away in 2012.
  • He paid 155 million yen a year later.
  • In 2019, he purchased a tuna for 333.6 million yen (2.1 million dollars).

Despite once commenting that he thought he "did too much," he has now proceeded to break his personal record another time.

An Annual Spectacle of Exorbitant Bids

The opening auction at the Toyosu fish market is traditionally associated with exceptionally high prices. In the prior year, the first tuna was purchased for 207 million yen by a separate culinary group, which announced the fish would be served at its eateries throughout the country.

The intense energy at the fish market during these pre-dawn auctions has evolved into a popular tourist attraction in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which commenced around 05:00 local time, was no different.

From Auction to Plate

The multi-million-dollar tuna was shortly thereafter prepared for customers at the entrepreneur's sushi restaurants immediately after the auction ended.

"I feel like I've begun the year in a positive way after eating something so lucky as the year gets underway," remarked one elated patron.
