Larry Summers Steps Down from ChatGPT Maker's Leadership
Former US treasury secretary Larry Summers is departing from the board at the artificial intelligence firm, just days after a collection of digital correspondence between him and late convicted sex offender the accused trafficker became publicly available.
Summers stated in a release that he was "thankful for the chance to have participated, optimistic about the promise of the enterprise, and anticipate tracking their progress".
The prominent academic, who formerly headed the prestigious university, announced on earlier this week that he would be scaling back from public responsibilities due to his association with Epstein.
Email Communications
The newly public messages demonstrated that the official exchanged messages with Epstein until the eve of his 2019 arrest for accused human trafficking of underage individuals.
In another announcement, the artificial intelligence company stated it respected the economist's choice to depart.
"We acknowledge his significant contributions and the perspective he provided to the directors," OpenAI stated.
Legislative Background
This news follows after the two houses of Congress decided on this week to endorse a bill that would mandate the Department of Justice to make public its documents on Jeffrey Epstein.
The legislation will afterward proceed to the office of the White House for signature. He has said he plans to sign the legislation, after modifying his stance on the issue following pressure from his followers.
Correspondence Findings
A collection of Epstein-connected messages made public by the Congressional committee last week mentioned several well-known personalities in the Epstein's former circle, without indicating any illegal behavior by those individuals.
The messages revealed that the economist and the financier regularly had dinners together, with the billionaire often attempting to introduce the official to prominent global figures.
Personal Response
After the messages were made available with the wider community, Summers expressed he took "total ownership for my misguided judgment to maintain corresponding with Mr Epstein".
He continued that he hoped "to rebuild faith and repair connections with the individuals most important to me".
Previous Positions
The economist held high-level positions under two Democratic presidents; acting as treasury secretary under the former president, and as leader of the National Economic Council under Barack Obama.
He led the institution from five years and continues to be a faculty member there. When announcing his step-down from public roles recently on this week, he said he would persist with his teaching commitments.
Further Repercussions
Following the economist's announcement on earlier this week, the Washington think tank, a liberal policy institute in the capital where Summers was a prominent member, confirmed that he was not connected with the group.
The former official joined the board of the technology firm, which makes the language model, in the previous year - following a defeated move to remove its chief executive the company leader.
