Later, the older suspect was freed with no charges, and authorities stated he had no connection in the attack.

New Guidance to Fight False Claims

This past summer, new guidelines were rolled out to address the spread of misinformation on social media, which had intensified after the tragic murder of young students in Southport previously.

A Conservative MP, whose constituency includes the area where the train halted, called it “sad” but necessary for authorities to quickly disclose the ethnicities of those detained.

“It’s not ideal, but I comprehend the reasons. They essentially have no choice at this point,” he remarked, stating that social media are leveraged to advance narratives, making it vital for law enforcement to provide accurate information to address rumors.

Far-Right Exploitation

Prior to the police announcement, right-leaning politicians had demanded a quicker action. For instance, the shadow home secretary pushed for prompt sharing of suspect information, while Nigel Farage stated on X that the people needed to know “as soon as possible”.

Moreover, far-right social media accounts sought to manipulate the event. A profile named “UK Nationalist”—boosting thousands of followers—shared an baseless allegation that a individual with a blade had been yelling a religious phrase.

Ongoing Suspicion

Despite police confirmed that the arrested individuals were British nationals, some individuals continued to suggest that information was being withheld.
