Offspring of Previous South African President Jacob G Zuma Refutes Terror Charges as Legal Proceedings Begins
The offspring of former South African Head of State Jacob G Zuma has denied all charges to terrorism-related charges at the beginning of her legal proceedings in the port city of the city of Durban.
Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, 43 years old, is being charged over comments she made on digital networks four years ago during fatal protests in South Africa that occurred subsequent to the apprehension of her parent.
A period of anarchy in several parts of the country in the summer of 2021, including plundering and intentional burning, left at least three hundred killed and resulted in damage worth an approximate $2.8bn (£2.2bn).
Zuma-Sambudla has been accused of fuelling this turmoil and confronts accusations of provocation to commit terrorism and public violence.
Context of the Case
The demonstrations were concentrated in the provinces of Gauteng and KZN and followed the previous president's apprehension for disobeying a legal directive to appear as a witness at an probe into allegations of impropriety while he was serving as president.
She has always refuted the allegations against her, with her legal representative in the past describing the prosecution's evidence as weak.
She has also frequently stated the allegations against her were an attempt to settle political scores with her father after he founded his own political organization and competed against the ruling party.
Endorsement and Court Representation
This was supported by the Zuma foundation, which stated the case was an "misuse of authority" and a "organized effort" of "politically motivated and familial harassment" against the previous head of state and his relatives.
A handful of backers from her party, uMkhonto weSizwe, turned up outside the provincial high court, while her father and other party leaders were present at the proceedings inside.
The defense has maintained that the evidence presented by prosecutors is unconvincing and does not have compelling grounds for a conviction.
