The Eurovision Song Contest Was Traditionally a Campy Joy – But It Has Transformed Into a Cynical Way to Whitewash War.

An freshly coined initialism came to light a couple of months into the intensive bombing of Gaza by Israel. Known as WCNSF, it signifies “Injured child with no living relatives”. This term is specific to Gaza, per insights from health professionals like paediatricians. Typically, it is uncommon for doctors to treat a minor who has seen the death of their whole family. But, there has been no semblance of normality about the devastating conflict in Gaza, where whole bloodlines have been eradicated and the number of young amputees is greater than that of anywhere else in the world. Nothing normal in numerous doctors coming back from a devastated terrain with accounts of children being deliberately targeted.

A Hell on Earth Regardless of a Announced Cessation of Hostilities

Conditions in Gaza persist as hell on earth. Vital medicines and equipment are failing to reach those in need, and major human rights organizations have stated that genocidal acts are still being committed. The Israeli government rejects these claims, just as it denies everything it is implicated in. But while traumatised orphans are now freezing in improvised encampments, there is a little heartwarming news: apparently nothing is going to stop the international singing competition from advancing its stated mission of “togetherness and artistic sharing.” Eurovision will continue to offer a welcoming platform for Israel, even though a number of European countries have now withdrawn in objection. Because this, apparently, is what international harmony looks like.

Eurovision, of course banned Russia from competing in 2022 due to the “grave situation in Ukraine”. But the crisis in Gaza seems treated differently.

Contradictory Principles

Overlook the circumstance that Israel was criticized for questionable voting tactics last year in what seems to have been an bid to politicise Eurovision. Forget the fact that a young child was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza just days ago. Forget the fact that attacks by settlers and systematic expulsions in the West Bank have increased dramatically. Overlook the situation that global media are still blocked from freely reporting in Gaza. All of this, apparently, should be seen as a barrier of Eurovision’s much-touted ethos of unity.

The Show Goes On Amidst Unimaginable Suffering

Eurovision marks seven decades next year – nearly twice the average life expectancy of an individual in Gaza at present. The event will proceed, but it will never be able to restore the camp joy it historically embodied. A contest that once promoted harmony has transformed into a cynical way to whitewash war.
