The network's Top Fresh Series of This Year Gets a Significant Extension for an Additional Two Seasons.

Last October, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. But, not long after, the network introduced a fresh animated series with a markedly softer vibe. Haha, You Clowns was gentle and comforting, reminiscent of a animated take of a serene talk show. During a period often characterized by bleakness, this show's earnestness resonated deeply and turned it into a breakout hit.

A Significant Investment

On December 18th, the network revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for a further two seasons. This offers showrunner Joe Cappa a massive runway to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The show focuses on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose defining trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four key characters.

"I’m so grateful to the fans of the show who welcomed the series and shared it with others," remarked Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for a little longer."

Executive Acclaim

Accompanying the news laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and oddly captivating." He thanked the fans who discovered the show and supported its peculiarly charming appeal.

"All of you got behind this new show, championed for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Different Kind of Comedy

Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a comforting antidote" to other adult animated fare. Viewers found something deeply soothing about following this charming family go about their simple existence.

In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa stated his desire to evolve comedy past its current sarcastic tone. He attributed this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.

“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” noted Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we must laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”

What Comes Next

Now, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa has the opportunity to be part of that very evolution. At a minimum, the renewal promises audiences a little more time to enjoy the heartfelt moments of the endearing Campbell clan.

The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The complete first season is currently streaming on HBO Max.
